Stalking the Beatles & not caring about soccer
Today was our full day in Liverpool before we fly out tomorrow morning, so I’ll take you through the events of the day!
We had a bit of a sleep in today, I set my alarm for 9am and I was not ready to wake up then. Unfortunately I didn’t sleep too well last night, as the was quite a lot of rain overnight, and the majority of the apartment building is undergoing major construction, so the rain on the metal scaffolding was so loud. Usually rain is comforting and helps me sleep, but it did get a bit crazy last night, so I didn’t get to sleep until around 1am I would say. So I wasn’t exactly well rested for the day, which may also be why I felt a bit flat for most of today, but we did some fun things regardless.
We got up and made some breakfast, then headed down to Royal Albert Dock again to find the Beatles Story, which is a display of the band from when the members met to when they broke up. Being a reasonably big Beatles fan meant that I really enjoyed this experience! It was so cool to get more backstory on the other people surrounding the band that you probably hadn’t heard of before, like their managers, club staff, family etc. It was put together so well, and even re-made the inside of the Cavern Club to what it was in the early 60s. If anything it made me even more of a Paul McCartney fan (if that’s even possible). I honestly got not the best vibes from John Lennon. It was clear that he was extremely charismatic, clever, and funny, but there was a certain in-genuine nature to him. Of course I could very much be wrong, it’s not like I know the guy. I don’t know, all the info about him sounded a bit off to me. But Paul stays slayin.
We spent about an hour and a half in the museum, then ate some lunch outside on one of their little picnic benches. From there we walked back through the city centre to find the bus stop we needed to take us out of the main city area and out into the northern part of Liverpool where Anfield Stadium was located. We decided only the night before that a tour of the stadium sounded like a good idea- mostly to have something to do, as originally we had reserved the afternoon for walking around the city. Come to realise, we had explored most of the notable parts that morning and the afternoon before. I wasn’t exactly thrilled to do the tour, but we didn’t have much else to do, I know Dad likes the soccer, and I’m happy to go along with anything so I didn’t really mind.
The tour was run very well, I’ll give them that. It was predominantly an audio guide, but there were tour guides everywhere who were massive LFC nerds and they were just busting to tell you everything possible. So that was cute, at least they were enthused! I’d say most of the experience was lost on me, considering my immense interest and love for soccer, I got bored of the whole thing rather quickly. The stadium itself was impressive, and walking out onto the pitch was cool, but I was very surface-level entertained. And that ceased when, at the end of the tour when I thought we were done, there was actually a whole other section for the LFC museum. Ok now I really don’t care. I think Dad caught onto this fact, and luckily we spent only another 40mins or so walking around before he could be coaxed out.
The bus back into the city was a good half an hour, so I had a little nap. Honestly top tip for you, if you’re in another city and want to do some sight-seeing but you’re really tired and don’t want to walk anywhere, there’s a good chance that if you’re in a big(ish) city their buses will be double decker. Would highly recommend getting on the city centre one, going up to the top level and getting the seat at the front, you’ll have incredible views and it’ll probably go past everything important that you’d have to walk to. I loved doing it in London because it also was just the price of public transport, not the really expensive tour buses. So that’s what we did in Liverpool on the way back from Anfield too! It’s the perfect way of still feeling like you’re doing something and seeing the city, but dude, by 3pm yesterday my feet simply did not want to carry my body another step. So this was the perfect solution.
Because Dad is still working whilst we’re travelling we needed to be back at our Airbnb by 4pm so he could have a phone call, which was perfect timing as we were both dead anyway, and I needed to edit a couple of videos and back my suitcase for Dublin.
We hung out at the Airbnb for a couple of hours then headed just across the road to the Duke Street Food Market, which was a big dining hall tucked away down a little alley. They had 7 restaurants I think, all centrally run, and the food was absolutely divine. Would highly recommend if you happen to be in Liverpool. The vibes are great and the food was relatively affordable compared to independent restaurants. And it was just nice to be around a bunch of people for a bit you know?
I’m about to go to sleep now, it’s only 9:30pm but Dad is insisting we get to the airport 3 hours early tomorrow to fly to Ireland because technically it’s an international flight. Which also means getting a bus at 7:45am. So fun. Let’s hope I survive.
Next stop, Dublin!
